How to Permaculture Your Life

How to Permaculture Your Life
How to Permaculture Your Life
Review Learning how to reskill and permaculture our lives will be increasingly vital as the collapse narrative continues to unfold over the coming years, and this book is a great primer to set us on our way … How To Permaculture Your Life is … a resource book for not only surviving but thriving in the Anthropocene era.

--Graham Burnett, permaculture teacher and author of The Vegan Book of Permaculture About the Author Dr Ross Mars has had a long involvement in permaculture and is one of the most authoritative permaculture teachers, designers and consultants in Australia, and author of four other books on the subject.

He has also produced two videos on energy efficient housing design and renewable energy systems for power generation. Besides designing, building and installing greywater systems, rainwater tank systems, gardens and water-sensible irrigation systems, Ross and Jenny are currently setting up their property, Candlelight Farm, in Mundaring that includes strawbale accommodation, demonstration gardens and a wholesale nursery.

How to Permaculture Your Life is a resource book for anyone who wants to live a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. It discusses: some of the most nutritious food and fodder plants, how to build gardens and improve our soils, strategies for rural properties, how to harvest, store, conserve and reuse water and energy, and much more!

Consumer review about How to Permaculture Your Life :

A very comprehensive guide to creating a resilient lifestyle. Dr Mars has spent many years studying permaculture techniques in a very practical way. His book is not about theory – which is seamlessly introduced as you read – but a description of how things work when you actually do them. From creating a soil profile to building solar heating systems, he provides useful detail about the basic skills required, aided by informative sketches. These are not only relevant to the small holder aiming for self sufficiency, but presented for the benefit of urban lifestyles too.Western Australia, where the book is set, enjoys a warmer and drier climate than the British Isles. I found the occasional contrast in core outlook fascinating. This book is a must-read for anyone from the UK planning to engage with food growing further south – project workers, volunteers, buyers etc.For anyone, this is the most approachable book about permaculture I've ever encountered. Buy it for your hippy niece, but also for your gardening friends. It's a jolly good read and an excellent present!(Read more)

Secret Greenhouse of Survival: How to Build the Ultimate Homestead & Prepper Greenhouse: Volume 2 (Secret Garden of Survival)

This is the ultimate sustainable homestead and prepper greenhouse, but purposely doesn’t look like it. Imagine a greenhouse that heats your home in the winter; and heats your water; that grows five times more food per sq. ft. than a hoop house; that provides food for you and your family all year long; where your food grows in 3 dimensions; where you never have to use fertilizer; where you never have to use pesticide, and where you can grow exotic foods (i.

e. citrus or coffee trees in New England); that allows you to start seedlings in the spring; that hides your solar electric system; and that can house your small animals or incubate chickens and ducks.

All disguised to look like a porch on your home, so that desperate and hungry passersby would have no idea that you have food growing there.

This greenhouse does all that. This book is a simple, straight-forward, step by step approach to creating your own Secret Greenhouse of Survival, and it’s easy and cheap to build! Written by Rick Austin, the Survivalist Gardener, the author of the #1 Best Selling book in Garden Design- The Secret Garden of Survival- How to Grow a Camouflaged Food Forest.

How to Grow World Record Tomatoes: A Guinness Champion Reveals His All-organic Secrets

How to Grow World Record Tomatoes A Guinness Champion Reveals His Allorganic Secrets
How to Grow World Record Tomatoes: A Guinness Champion Reveals His All-organic Secrets

For most of his 80+ years, Charles Wilber studied how to best work with nature. In How to Grow World Record Tomatoes he tells his personal story and offers his philosophy and approach to gardening. He reveals for the first time how he grows record-breaking tomatoes and produce of every variety. There's no magic involved. Just a well thought out system that gives plants more than they could ever want, and makes it possible for them to reach their full potential.

Wilber's compost is the cornerstone along with a wide circumference around plants layered with compost, alfalfa meal and mulch.

Valuable pruning and watering details are given, too, as well as a new way of looking at seeds. As you will learn, growing awesome tomatoes integrates every aspect of gardening that you can imagine.

Consumer review about How to Grow World Record Tomatoes: A Guinness Champion Reveals His All-organic Secrets :

This book deserves serious attention by a generation that is gradually poisoning its own food supply and misusing its agricultural resources. Mr. Wilber teaches a total gardening system that encompasses sound organic principles, including composting with kudzu, watering at the soil-line, using extra-sturdy cage supports, mulching, cover-cropping, observing problems, garden sanitation, etc.. His methods are not earth-shatteringly different from those found in other organic gardening books, but his success in growing record-breaking produce is dependent on the consistent and proven use of all of his collective techniques together. I really enjoyed reading his life's philosophy regarding our stewardship of the earth, i.e. the dominion rather than the domination of the earth ("If you take care of nature, she'll take care of you") and plan to implement his techniques in my own garden this season. One of its main goals is to help you grow the most produce from the fewest number of plants in the smallest amount of space. The fact that his vegetables are often record-breakers is an added bonus. The book is written in a non-technical, easy-going style. The chemical companies will hate this book, but to those of you who care for the earth and enjoy eating your own healthy chemical-free vegetables, I highly recommend this one. I only wish the photos in the book were in color. Thank you, Mr. Wilber, for your generosity in passing your life's work onto future generations!(Read more)

The New Age Herbalist: How to Use Herbs for Healing, Nutrition, Body Care, and Relaxation

Under the guidance of best-selling author Richard Mabey, a team of experts has created a hugely informative herbal reference. New Age Herbalist covers the use of herbs in the home, garden, medicine, nutrition and healing. An inspiring and invaluable herbal reference.

Consumer review about The New Age Herbalist: How to Use Herbs for Healing, Nutrition, Body Care, and Relaxation :

I love this book, its another one thats dog-eared, and used for reference a lot. While the pictures are limited, the ones of the various plants that are included are excellent. This book covers just about all aspects of herbs you can think of and then some. From the first part where you have an introduction to herbs, along with myths associated with them and a glossary of herbs where you can gain a ton of knowledge from the herbs that are listed (The descriptions, and information is short but sweet, but not short on information). Part two covers the basics of practical herbalism. Its facinating, in its layout going from beauty and using plants for dyeing to using herbs for healing, and nutrition around the home. Part three ventures into the gardening aspect, and discusses the garden ecosystem, commercial growing, and plants to go into a garden. At the end of the book there are references, index and glossaries. All in all this is a great book, it covers a lot of information in a little space and keeps it simple to boot.(Read more)

Pergolas, Arbours and Arches: Their History and How to Make Them

Pergolas Arbours and Arches Their History and How to Make Them
Pergolas, Arbours and Arches: Their History and How to Make Them
Review Pergolas, arbours, arches. All mean different things to different people and indeed have done since their first appearance in Ancient times. Depicted in frescoes, murals and mosaics in Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt it is apparent that these structures date back at least to 80BC.

They were often highly elaborate, made of marble and stone and offered a welcome escape from the sun, a place to recline and enjoy fresh air whilst still protected from the elements.

They were practical too, the Romans with their bacchanalian tendencies, soon realised their use for growing grapes coupled with decorativeness.

Arbours and arches predominated in the formal Medieval gardens too, many religious paintings depicting saints and Madonnas under rose-clad bowers.

More rustic than in earlier centuries, they have an attractive simplicity which is today enjoying a renaissance with organic living willow structures.

But the pergolas and arches most often recognised are those of the Victorian and Edwardian era. With the Golden Age of plant-hunting bringing an ever varied range of plants to British shores, great prestige was attached to these structures to show off their new acquisitions.

This is an attractive, well laid-out and informative history of these garden structures from their earliest times to today's contemporary models.

In all their varied forms: stone, timber, brick, wire, living plants, their diversity and use is extensive. From flowering plants such as roses and clematis, foliage cover such as parthenocissus and ivy. From fruit such as vines and apples to vegetables such as beans and gourds. Katherine Swifts "garden tour" of some of the finest pergolas in Britain, gives an in-depth look at five gardens, including the world famous Larburnum Tunnel at Bodnant and Jekyll and Lutyen's class design partnership at Hestercombe.

Paul Edwards design specifications and projects round off the work on a practical note for today's gardeners, offering them a chance to recreate history in their own gardens.

This title offers both the history of the pergola - how it has been used and enjoyed over the centuries - and a manual of design and planting for today's gardener.

It begins with chapters featuring the various periods when pergolas and arbours have been key elements in the garden. It then looks at four of the very best pergolas found today. It also looks at the principles of design and the choice and care of suitable plants, before giving detailed drawings for six structures.

The book seeks to be both fun and instructive.

This book walks you through all the components, what they do and how to rig it up, Ive added some photos of a project I did which is loosley based on the "solar cart" project, mine doesnt include the cart and uses a folding solar panel for portability, a bison box instead of an inverter. Separate inverter can plug into the cigarette lighter port on the bison box if required.1. Bison Box2. 100Ah 12v Solar Battery (inside the bison box)3. Charge Controller4. MC4 Connectors5. Extra Cabling6. Folding Solar Panel without charge controllerSo there you go, all that from reading this book, I've read other books but they only give you vague ideas for projects but never discuss the guts of the operation, I mean, I'm not an electrician and I managed to rig this up and it works really well, I wouldnt have had the confidence without this book(Read more)

A Hut of One's Own: How to Make the Most of Your Allotment Shed
Review 'Delightful ... full of inspiring practical advice' Scotsman.'This beautifully produced book is [...] perfect over a cup of tea during a downpour ... The illustrations are charming' Cotswold Life. About the Author Emily Chappell is an illustrator and graduate of the Glasgow School of Art. Her work is typically hand-drawn and includes subtle social commentary. She has been a plotholder of an allotment in Glasgow for over eight years. www.emilychappell.com.

Allotments are places to grow food, but they are so much more than that. They are also places that encourage spontaneity, exploration, learning, sharing, restful activity and camaraderie. This book is a celebration of the allotment hut – their architecture and design, but most of all the wonderful invention and resourcefulness that makes each one unique.

A series of original and charming illustrations offer insight into the world of allotment huts and offer inspiration to create your own, very special shed.

This is the ideal gift book for allotment folk, gardeners or those curious about alternative lifestyles and the quirkier side of life.
